Tips for FileMaker Pro Templates

spacer Introduction

FileMaker Pro is a widely-used database application specifically because it is easy to use and flexible. Even if you've never created a database in your life, you can have your own FileMaker Pro database be up and running in under five minutes. Using a template is a great way to begin with FileMaker Pro. Here's how to use a template:

Open A Template

Whether you're using Windows or Macintosh, the procedure is the same. In FileMaker, go to the "File" menu at the top of your computer screen and select "New Database". You'll see a screen like this:

In this case we've selected Create a new file using a template which reveals a list of pre-made templates. We then selected Library.fm5 which is a template for keeping track of all the items in our library. If you're unclear about what a given template file does, you can select it, then click the Template Info button on the lower left to obtain specfic information about each of the templates.

Start Using It

Click the OK button, and you are taken to your new template-based database. Because the new database opens with a blank record, you can immediately start using the database.

Once you've entered the data for your first record, click the New button to add a new record and continue. The database already has layouts that show all records, and the Reports button will guide you through creation of formatted reports for printing.

Modify the Layout

If you are satisfied with the look of the database, you can use it as is. However, if you want to modify the layout colors, add new fields, or otherwise alter the database from its template, you can easily do so.

Using the View menu at the top of your screen, switch to Layout mode.

In Layout mode, select an object (such as a field or section of background color). By default all components of the layout are locked. Go to the Arrange menu at the top of your screen and select Unlock. You'll then be able to change that object, as illustrated below:
