Use the following tips when entering project/station data into the
JASON system. The corresponding field number in JASON is listed in each
tip. The most important thing to think about is how well the
information will "sell" your project to a prospective volunteer!
- Project Information (1-3): Review your project
information. Check for accuracy in the contact information and look at
how the name of your project is presented. Are there abbreviations in
the title that might not be clear to a prospective volunteer?
- Geographic Information (4a, 4b): Be sure to
select all geographic areas served by your project, including
metropolitan areas and counties. This will ensure that your project
information reaches the broadest target audience.
- Counties (4c): List the exact name of the
counties you serve, separated by commas. This field provides vital
search information for Jason. Do not enter any information
other than the name of the county, as this will cause the software not
to recognize your entry, in which case your project may not come up in
a search by zip code.
- Five Keywords or phrases fields (5). Key words
and phrases are used by JASON to help volunteers find your project when
they search. In this field enter words or short phrases that a
volunteer might use when searching for an opportunity. For example,
some good key words are "tutoring," "children" "homeland security."
When a volunteer searches on keywords, JASON will search all your text
entries, so try to think of words that you have not already used in
your short or long descriptions.
- Project and Activity Descriptions (5-7): For
these text fields you have the option of composing the information
offline in a Microsoft Word document and then cutting-and-pasting it
into the field. This is your chance to really sell your project, so
give it some thought! Pay very close attention to the number of
characters allowed by the text box. If you exceed this number, you will
not be able to submit your information. (If you use Word to compose your entry, you can click on Tools and select Word Count to find out how many characters you are using.)
- Search Criteria (8-17): This is where you enter all the information regarding experience, skills, issue areas, benefits, etc.
The information you enter here will be displayed to the potential
volunteer. This is also the information that JASON uses to match your
project to the search conducted by the volunteer. It is important that
you enter as much information as you can that applies to your project,
to make sure you are not eliminating yourself unnecessarily from any
searches.
- Skills (12): Include any skills that could be
of use. These skills will not be communicated to the potential
volunteer as requirements. Many seniors search for volunteer
opportunities by the skill set they would like to use, so if you have
opportunities for volunteers with specific skills, be sure to include
them.
- Time to Respond (18): JASON gives you the
option to decide how quickly you can reasonably respond to a volunteer
who has expressed an interest in your project. By entering information
into this box (e.g., 24 hours, three days, one week), you will direct
the system to advise the interested volunteer how long it may take you
to respond.
