Tech-Smart Defined
Technology is revolutionizing our
world in much the same way that automobiles replaced traditional "horse
power." Yet the introduction of new technologies, software, and
web-based applications can raise more questions than answers at first.
- How will I find time to learn to use this new software and computer?
- Will the new programs work on the old computers?
- Is our office ready to be networked, and how will that help us?
- Who will set it all up?
Being tech-smart isn't just about computers, network connections,
e-mail and digital cameras. It's about making good use of technology to
help you do what you already want to do -- to achieve your program
goals.
In general, a tech-smart office is one that makes efficient use of
resources (including people, equipment, and materials) in order for
work to be done smarter and more productively. In a Tech-Smart Office:
- You have…certain equipment and facilities.
- You do…certain activities to accomplish your goals using technology.
- You plan…how you will fund technology to support your people, your goals, and your mission.
A Technology Plan
A technology plan is essentially a funding proposal to get the
equipment, staffing, training, and support you need. Technology
planning isn't just about creating a written document - it's an ongoing
process. The plan helps to guide your thinking and acts as a "working"
document to be revisited as your needs change.
Technology planning serves as a key tool in getting funding. Like
any other planning effort you do in your agency, a well-developed plan
will also:
- Help you prioritize and focus efforts to reach your goals
- Involve key people in the conversation and attract their support
- Help you budget and make appropriate, cost-effective purchase
- Use staff effectively
- Enhance communication
- Keep track of everything
- Project a professional image
