Using SurveyMonkey to Create an Online Survey

Online surveys are a great way to gather feedback from volunteers, funders, program staff, and the communities you serve. There are many online survey tools available, and many of them offer free basic subscriptions. This article discusses the features of a basic (free) subscription from Survey Monkey.

The Survey Monkey Website

Go to the Survey Monkey website at http://www.surveymonkey.com.

Sign Up for an Account

Click the button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Enter your e-mail address into the E-mail (Login) field. Enter and confirm your password in the Password and Confirm Password fields. Click the Submit button.

Create a New Survey

From the main menu options, along the bar at the top, select New Survey . Click on the From Scratch radio-button to bring up a new template. Click Next .

Select a Theme

From the Theme menu, select a look from one of the listed options.

Edit Titles

On the same page, click the Edit Title button and then type the name of your survey into the first field. Select whether you want your title Hidden or Visible to users. If you wish, you can also change the titles of the Next, Done, Back , and Exit navigation links by typing new names into the appropriate fields. Click the Update button, which will return you to the Design Survey page.

Edit Numbering

Click the Edit Numbering button. Select or deselect the check-boxes labeled Auto-number pages and Auto-number questions to determine your numbering display. From the pull-down menu, choose to number questions within entire survey or to restart numbering within each page . Click the Update button, which will return you to the Design Survey page.

Edit a Page

Click the Edit Page button for the Untitled Page . Enter a new title in the Page Title field. Select whether you want your title Hidden or Visible from the menu to the right of the text field. Use the Page Description field to add directions or other info about the page. Click Update , which will return you to the Design Survey page.

Add a Page

Click the Add Page button. Type the title of your page into the Page Title field.

Add a Question

Click the Add Question button for the page you want to add a question to. Select a Question Type from the pull-down menu. To view examples of question types, click on the type of question link above the pull-down menu. If the question requires Answer Choices , be sure to hit the Return key after you type each choice. Click Add . Then click Back .

Move or Copy

Click the Copy/Move button of the first page. Select the page or question that you want copied or moved by selecting it from the Original Selection menu.

From the Select Destination Location menu, choose the location within the survey to which the page or question will be copied or moved.

In the upper right corner of the window, click the Move button or the Copy button depending upon your preference.

Preview the Survey

Preview your survey at any time by clicking the Preview button in the upper right corner of the window. After you have completed building your survey, browse through to make sure it is complete and accurate.

Send the Survey

Select My Surveys from the main menu at the top of the page.

Notice your new survey. Click the box icon labeled Closed next to the survey that you just created. The box icon will open up and the label will change to Opened . When your survey is open, it means that you are ready to start collecting responses. If your survey is closed, responses cannot be collected.

To the right of your survey, click the icon labeled Collect .

On the Collect Responses page, notice the various options available for sending/advertising your survey. The options are listed in order from least complex implementation to most complex implementation.

Ask co-workers to take your survey to ensure its usability and clarity. Make any final edits or adjustments, then launch your survey according to your chosen method.

Analyze the Survey

Go to the My Surveys page. Click the Analyze icon to view the responses for the survey. You are now on the Results Summary page. This is the summary of responses for all of the questions in your survey. From the pull-down menu, you can select to look at all questions or just one individual question.
